Almost everyone knows the film with Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. But who knows that there is also an opera of the same name? It premiered a good 20 years ago in San Francisco – and helped an up-and-coming composer to achieve his worldwide breakthrough: Jake Heggie, then 40 years old and previously employed in the PR department of the opera house.
